An embodied voice is one that is resonant, responsive, intelligent, primal, free, clear, vulnerable, and authentic; and, yes, it is all of those things at the same time. The embodied voice connects us to our truth, the truth of our words, and to the other.
In the 20 years I have been teaching voice what I have consistently found is that it is what everyone seeking voice work desires – to have an embodied voice. It’s not just for performers – it’s for everyone.
We hear great motivational speakers like Brene Brown tout the many virtues of embracing our vulnerability. And it is true – it is a life unlike any other when we can come back into connection with our presence, our vulnerability, our truth. But how does one navigate that when living in this modern age that is, by its nature, trauma inducing and encourages us to shrink from presence?
Sound, breath, somatic movement, and mindfulness artfully, and intelligently, combined creates a clear, and reliable, pathway back to our natural state of ease and connection. When exercises are done as part of a regular practice, the body remembers its vibrancy and more of who we truly are, more of our message, gets revealed. It is revealed because we have done the work to be grounded, safe, and secure in our sense of self and our desire to have meaningful connection so that it becomes second nature.
This workshop will provide solid exercises to help you on your path towards an embodied voice. The two and one half hours will combine Fitzmaurice Voicework’s Destructuring and Restructuring, Presence (Rodenburg), and somatic integration techniques to help you connect effortlessly, and with authenticity, to your message and your audience. It is appropriate for actors, performers of all types, non-performers, motivational speakers, etc.
It is recommended to bring some piece of text to use throughout the workshop. Hopefully they are words that mean something to you.
