Neutral American Accents – Level One

January 6th – February 17th

Mondays, 6pm – 7:30pm

Are you wanting to learn a Neutral American accent? Whether you are from another country or you are an actor wanting to increase your versatility, this class is for you!

We will cover all elements of the Neutral American accent, including the variations for different regions of the U.S. and socio-economic levels. We will also discover how to bring in a light or strong version of the accent and discuss how to make sound choices appropriate for the character or real life situation.

People sound like what they want to emulate. Americans are largely not always aware of their own speech patterns. And we all make rather quick decisions about a person’s background when we hear them speak. Those decisions don’t always accurately reflect reality, but they have a trackable history. We have distinct patterns of speech that give the listener a lot of information and sometimes we puzzle why this is so.

If English is not your first language then when you took classes chances are the instructor did not spend a lot of time going over pronunciation for American accented English. In some cases, that can have people feeling a bit self conscious and not sure what to do about it. Having some very specific information, and exercises to help you achieve a more American sounding accent, can offer you quite a bit of confidence.

This illuminates patterns of American accents in a way that is free of judgement and full of specific technique and playful inquiry!

You will receive homework each week to progress on your journey towards a Neutral American sound. So, whether you are looking for other Americans to be able to understand you more clearly, increase your chances at job promotion, be able to take on a variety of character roles for stage or screen, or just feel more confident in your speech – this class will give you tools you can begin to immediately apply.

**Though seven weeks may sound like a long time, in reality it will be a very thorough first step towards mastering a Neutral American accent. Expect to come away with a lot of information, and practice, to continue your journey through your own exploration or through further study with a teacher. It is a beginner course. A very, very good beginner course. It will challenge you and, hopefully, allow you moments to begin to feel very proud of your ability to achieve a more Neutral American accent.

Class size is kept very small. Register early to guarantee a spot.
